Route 63 - Colchester - West Mersia

The 63 from Colchester to West Mersea island offers the perfect combination of city and seaside for couples looking for a day of rest and relaxation. The route travels through Colchester High Street, which is the oldest high street in Britain, dating back 2000 years to Roman times, before traversing The Strood, the causeway which connects Mersea Island to the mainland.

Crossing The Strood onboard a double-decker gives passengers a grandstand view of the estuary, capturing the magic of the island which is cut off by the tide twice a day. On arrival at the beach, visitors are met with an expanse of golden stand and pretty pastel beach huts, offering a tranquil retreat for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of seaside attractions. This is an exquisite location for a romantic beach day, or a stroll along the sand with your dog.

Although there are not many public conveniences beach, this adds to its appeal as a coastal hideaway, ideal for walking, reading and relaxation. However, if you fancy a date on the water, there are a number of activities you can try your hand at, including paddleboarding, kayaking and surfing.

It is also a great location for seafood-lovers with many restaurants specialising in oysters, which have been cultivated in the creeks across the island since Roman times. There’s The Dukes Seafood, which boasts beautiful views over the estuary and serves oysters, seafood platters and many more hot and cold fish dishes; The Coast Inn, which serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, cakes & coffee and prides itself on the best fish and chips on the island; and The Company Shed, which specialises in seafood platters to eat in or take away! Travelling by bus also allows you to enjoy a crisp glass of white as the perfect accompaniment!

To top it all off, we have great ticket options available! For couples, the £2 single fare is a great option, but if you are travelling with your children, the Seasiders Family Day ticket for £11.90, which covers 2 adults and up to 3 children all day, is a great choice. Even better – under 5s travel for free! Tickets can be bought via the Hedingham and Chambers app or from the driver on the day with cash or contactless.

Catching the 63 is a wonderful way to experience the magic of West Mersea!
